The Official Blog Announcement For The Tedim Accident Victims Relief Fund

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

We, the “Tedim Accident Victims Relief Fund” committee would like to announce that we are releasing the official blog for the “Tedim Accident Victims Relief Fund” Committee. Our intension of creating this blog is to inform the world of this tragic accident which happened on the 26th November, 2010 on the road between Tedim and Tonzang townships in Chin State, Myanmar. This incident was recorded as the highest casualties accident in our road accidents history.
Before the incident, the victims were travelling on their way to attend the Cope Centennial Celebration to be held during the 25-28 November, 2010 in Tedim, Chin State, Myanmar. Although the Cope Centennial Celebration was supposed to be held during the 5-7 of November, 2010, the SPDC’s election had interfered the pre-decided celebration dates of the celebration. It was a well planned celebration expecting the attendees to be around from 30,000 to 50,000 from domestic and abroad to participate the hundred years of Chin/Zomi Christian Centennial and also for the invention of the writing script for the Chin/Zomi people. As other attendees for the celebration arriving from various places around Burma and the world, the victims to be of this accident were also travelling toward Tedim city. Unfortunately the accident took place just 8 miles away from their destination, which is Tedim. The road that they were travelling is the Kalay-Tedim-Cikha-Imphal road which was built and used by the British during the Second World War for their troops’ transportation. The road was not properly maintained by the Burmese governments since the British left Burma. Though the road was built as a highway now it left with some rugged space just enough for a Jeep and small bus to run barely with dust. Travelling on this road stretch required some strong nerves that people travelling always prayed before they leave from one place to another.
The police from the Tedim Township Command arrived to the scene about 30 minutes after the accident. TThey took some details of the dead and interviewed the injured ones and left the place without doing anything to help them nor effort to rescue the victims. There was the No. 268 Light Infantry Battalion stationed near the accident place about 7 miles away. They were not touched by the news nor lend any helping hands to the victims. The rescue attempts were orchestrated by the Zomi Students Assocition, the Zomi Youth Association, a Bus from Chin Taung Tan Company and a jeep from Haimual line were involved in the efforts. The Police disturbance action caused so many lives wasted on the way to the Tedim hospital as they were wasting precious rescuing time by checking identities of the dead and interviewing the injured ones without proper medical attention first. The public and student body were so angry that they forced their way to the hospital emergency wards so that the victims could be attended by the doctors and nurses. People re-accounted that the dead numbers increased because of the Police because the initial dead was only 12 at the accident scene and some dead could had been prevented.  There were 17 people confirmed dead by the hospital official and the police although it could be higher as the days gone by. There are so many injured victims staying in the hospital without medical attention or untreated conditions which could also lead to more dead in numbers.  Local news confirmed 54 people were in the hospital as of the 26 November 2010. Among them the 23 people are so weak and with bad condition of treatments and are in danger conditions.
The dead bodies were sent back to their villages by volunteered transportations on the same day of the accident there was a chaotic state in the downtown with people running around for the accident victims and other were busying for the celebration. It could be seen on the road that there were so much blood stains and the injured victims were crying loud with agonies and pains. The families left by the victims were so poor that they are not able to afford a proper coffin for the dead and for the treatment of the injured ones. It’s learnt that a simple coffin would cost about 12,000 Kyats in Tedim and there would be so much debts occurred by the medical treatments for the injured ones. Local residents in Tedim are trying their best to help the dead and injured victims but not so sufficient. Now they, the local people, have decided that they will rebuild the Tonzang-Tedim road to be worthy for transportation. Now that the local people and the victim families are united as one voice to raise supports and awareness to the world, they entrusted the World Zomi Congress to organise and collect funds and other helps from the empathizers around the world.
Now we have created the “Tedim Accident Victim Relief Fund” Committee to raise funds and do awareness to the people. We officially announced the Tedim Accident Victim Relief Fund’s Blog which is at:  http://tavrfund.blogspot.com/.
